Tools
A continuous or batch chemical process can only be optimized through the effective use of precise process data and controls. With the practical application of technology, both man and machine can readily make quick, accurate decisions. LSI has many years of experience in implementing automated control systems using technologies that range from simple single loop controllers to large, complex DCS systems.
Chemical production facilities typically have many areas that require different types of automation. Obviously, some areas of a plant do not require loop control. These areas may have discrete control needs and are often addressed using PLCs. However, the trend is for companies to use “hybrid” controllers that easily handle both discrete and process variables within the same architecture. With this in mind, it is obvious that there is benefit in creating a common connectivity. A single network of all control equipment leads to more efficient interaction, plant supervision, and historical analysis. Operators can monitor the process using wireless monitoring devices from anywhere within the plant and others can gain access to important information through data channels connected to Ethernet LANs and WANs.
The capability to implement process, discrete, and hybrid control, plus the know-how to create connectivity between them is not found readily. Many companies specialize in one of these areas but do not have the resources or experience to implement all. Logical Systems has always looked at how the entire operation works together, therefore LSI does not focus on just continuous or discrete processes alone. In fact, LSI is fully capable of implementing continuous, discrete, or “hybrid” control systems.
Batch
Another distinction to be made is in the realm of batch control. Some batch operations are easily controlled in a PLC environment, while others greatly benefit from the sequencing logic of a DCS. In fact, some batch systems are so complex and require such flexibility that special “batch” software is used to model and “orchestrate” the process. Typically, the more flexible the production facility, the more likely batch orchestration becomes an advantage. Again, not all engineering and integration firms have solid batch experience. It takes skill, experience, and the technical know-how to determine the appropriate needs on a batch project, and the staff at LSI is abundant in all three. LSI has implemented S88 systems, not only at the batch level, but certain S88 principles have been adopted into continuous processes as well.
The chemicals industry is very diverse, requiring various processes and applications. Whether your process demands continuous, batch, discrete, or “hybrid” applications, Logical Systems is able to deliver exceptional solutions, providing the highest level of performance, flexibility, and ease of use at the lowest cost of ownership. In short, LSI can help you increase productivity, improve quality, and reduce costs thanks to our broad range of knowledge and experience.
